WDS Sees Debut of NIMR’s Enhanced JAIS MK2

NIMR, a leading manufacturer of combat-proven wheeled military vehicles under EDGE Group, unveiled the upgraded JAIS MK2 armoured vehicle at the World Defence Show (WDS) 2024 in Riyadh.

This milestone completes the upgrade of NIMR’s entire product line (Ajban, Hafeet and JAIS) to the second generation, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and market excellence.

The JAIS strikes a crucial balance between firepower, survivability, and mobility for modern, conventional, and asymmetric operations. Crew survivability is prioritised through a battle-proven “crew citadel” protection system, guarding against mine, Improvised Explosive Device (IED), and ballistic threats.

Cost-effective Solutions
The JAIS vehicle architecture supports various mission configurations and equipment options, including a fully motorised infantry section with a manned turret or remote weapon system. The vehicle offers cost-effective solutions for roles such as recce, patrol, utility, and specialised tasks, including an ambulance variant.

The modular JAIS family of vehicles features modern suspension and powertrain, a high power-to-weight ratio, and exceptional situational awareness.

Developed to meet the most challenging operational and environmental conditions, JAIS vehicles come equipped with steep approach and departure angles, a central tyre inflation system, and run-flat inserts as standard.

The JAIS class of mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles in 4x4 and 6x6 are customisable, multi-purpose platforms for all military requirements with unrivalled protection across diverse terrain on- and -off road.

Efficient MK2 Evolution
The JAIS 4×4 stands as an MRAP vehicle supporting conventional, modern, and asymmetric combat operations. The JAIS MK2, an evolution of its predecessor, enhances critical system protection and mobility within the same weight class.

With a revamped electrical system, increased payload, expanded internal crew capacity, and additional external storage, its design emphasises ergonomics. The vehicle features a reduced thermal signature and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) compliance, contributing to heightened overall efficiency. NIMR commenced JAIS MK2 deliveries to customers in 2023 following successful development, testing, and production phases.

Abri du Plessis, CEO, NIMR, said: “Completing the comprehensive update on the JAIS MK2 and across all our product lines is a significant landmark for NIMR.”

Milrem’s UGV Prowess
At the Show, Milrem Robotics showcased advanced autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) THeMIS, enhancing combat operations and reducing manpower.

Featured were the THeMIS Combat and THeMIS Cargo, in collaboration with Wahaj and EDGE Group.

THeMIS Combat UGVs provide high precision direct fire support for manoeuvre units and act as a force multiplier. Equipped with Wahaj’s self-stabilising, dual-gun Scorpion Remotely Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS), advanced sensors and fire control system, THeMIS Combat UGVs allow units to assess and engage the enemy at maximum standoff distances, increasing force protection and survivability.

THeMIS Cargo UGVs are intended to reduce the cognitive load of soldiers and provide a means to carry and utilise extra gear and firepower. These UGVs increase the mobility of dismounted units and make them more effective against the adversary. The THeMIS Cargo can also be used for casualty evacuation, autonomous resupply and to support on-base logistical activities.

THeMIS UGVs can utilise Milrem’s Intelligent Functions Kit (MIFIK) for independent mission execution through waypoint navigation and customisable behaviours based on location or event.

EDGE-Turkish Aerospace Tie-up
EDGE also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Turkish Aerospace, a prominent Türkey-based aerospace and defence technology company at the Show, to work together on several aerospace-specific initiatives.

The agreement represents a joint commitment to integrate EDGE’s advanced payloads and sensors to Turkish Aerospace’s products. With the MoU, the two companies will provide continuous intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR).

It also includes the potential for technology transfer (TOT), integration, and manufacturing.

Khaled Al Zaabi, President of Platforms & Systems, EDGE Group, said: “Our agreement to collaborate with Turkish Aerospace as the partner of choice for advanced airborne projects strengthens our continued cooperation with Türkey’s defence industry ecosystem, and speaks volumes about the global appeal and trust placed in us as a leading international technology and defence company. It highlights the capabilities EDGE has developed and acquired since our inception only four years ago, including homegrown UAE technology.”

The President and CEO of Turkish Aerospace, Prof. Temel Kotil, stated: “I wish this memorandum of understanding between Turkish Aerospace and EDGE to be beneficial to both companies, and hope that this collaboration will be expanded in the coming years.”.
